State Sensing

In real-world applications, it is often necessary to know not only the health and integrity of the structure (in terms of damages) but also other state properties of the structure, such as temperature and strain profiles.

Many of Acellent's Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) systems provide multi-modal sensing capabilities, including:

As merely one example, Acellent collaborated with the United States Air Force in a structural state-sensing program, in which we designed an SHM system that provided all of the capabilities listed above on a stiffened fiberglass composite panel.

Our SMART Layer® sensor network supports multiple types of sensors, including piezoelectric (PZT) transducers, Resistance Temperature Detectors (RTDs), strain gauges, Micro Electro-Mechanical System (MEMS) sensors, fiber-optic sensors (such as Fiber Bragg Gratings, or FBGs), and even digital sensors. If our standard designs don't cover your use-case, we will design and manufacture custom "hybrid" SMART Layers®, containing exactly the sensors you need, in the layout you want, to fit the needs of a specific application. When suitably-designed SMART Layers® are paired with our proprietary data-acquisition hardware and analytics software, the result is an integrated state-sensing system that is capable of providing exactly the information you need in real-time.
