State Sensing

In real-world applications, it is often necessary to know not only the health of the structure in terms of damages but also other state properties of the structure, such as temperature and strain. Having an integrated system, like our state sensing system, that is capable of providing this information is extremely desirable.

Our SMART Layer® sensors, paired with our proprietary hardware and software, make it possible to provide information on multiple states of a structure. It is even possible to integrate multiple sensor types, including strain gauges, MEMS sensors, and fiber-optic sensors, into a hybrid SMART Layer.

Acellent worked on a structural state sensing program with the U.S. Air Force to provide the following multi-modal sensing capabilities on a stiffened fiberglass composite panel:

  • Measurement of temperature distribution
  • Dynamic strain response
  • Direct damage detection
  • Impact detection
